VISUAL PROGRAMMING

With our Coding for Kids program, we introduce students (3rd through 7th grade) to the world of computer science and programming.
In this workshop, students learn to create puzzles, games, animations, and stories using visual programming. The final team project encourages students to interact with their peers and build games that use all the skills they have learnt.

Note: This course is designed for kids who do not have any previous experience using Scratch/Tynker or any other programming languages.

These workshops are very popular and there is always a waiting list. Each session builds on the concepts learnt in the previous sessions. Sign up only if your child can attend all the sessions. Here is a general curriculum for this workshop:

Session 1
  • Introduce to visual programming using Tynker and code.org.
  • We go over step by step instructions to build a simple game that is completely equipped with sound effects, scores, and timers.
  • After that students build their own first game by using techniques they have learned so far.

Session 2 -3
  • We go over step by step instructions to create art, sound effects. and animations.
  • Students learn more advanced concepts like functions and passing controls.
  • Students create more sophisticated games using these concepts.

Final Session
  • Students form into teams and create games using all the concepts they learned so far.
  • They showcase their games and compete for prizes!
  • The team projects are the highlights of these workshops. Students make new friends and also learn public speaking skills.
  • Check out this game created by a team of 4th graders! Move the boat with the left and right arrows. Catch as many bananas as possible but avoid the coconuts. If a coconut falls on the boat, the game stops.

What's next?
Students can continue to use the Tynker accounts we made for the them during the class for as long as they want. They can also join our Python workshop to get introduced to structured programming languages.

Our web design workshop (using HTML/CSS) is also a good option for students in 6th grade and above. Check out our registration page and register for one of these classes!
